This is Impossible.PART 1 I will never be caught, I will never surrender. Bloody fools! Who do they think they are? They can't... That was her last thought, for as she ran, someone threw a large rock at the back of her head and she was unconcious in a second. For once, she was wrong, for once, she met a worthy opponant-and was beaten. Taren leaned over the young theif, assessing the one girl who'd managed to elude the palace guards for 3 years. Looking at her, he knew she couldn't have been older than 16 or 17, and he was also surprised that this girl was quite beautiful. He'd expected another ragged street-rat, but Acacia was different, better. "So this is the famous Acacia Novakku," he mumbled to his partner and close friend, Leiam "Funny, she looks like a mere girl to me," he lied. "Make no mistake, Taren, Acacia's dangerous." Leiam warned. "Well, dangerous or not, we have to get her to the dungeon" with that, he disarmed the unconious girl, hoisted her up onto his horse and prepared to set off back toward the palace. "What a shame." "Yes," Leiam also prepared to head back. "But it's either we do our jobs, or we lose our heads." he reminded him shortly. PART 2 It was a long ride back, and was made longer when Acacia woke up. She bolted upright in the saddle as soon as her eyes opened, and reached for the sword that wasn't there. Scared and angry, she jumped from the saddle and ran, but she didn't get far before Leiam spun his horse around and grabbed her by the hair. She screamed and tried desperately to get out of Leiam's cruel grasp. So preoccupied, it took her a moment to realize what was said next. "Leiam! Let her go!" Taren shouted, "That's no way to treat ANY lady. I can handle this." Both Leiam and Acacia gaped at him. "Hast thee gone mad, Taren?!" Leiam gasped, "She's just a lowely street-rat." "I don't care, she's still a woman, and you know better." "Thank thee, Captain Kruccianai, but I can take care of myself!" Acacia snapped, struggling again to free her golden tresses, her sapphire eyes flashing with rage. It was Taren's turn to gape. "You KNOW me?!" "I know OF thee." she corrected him, "I recognised thy name" "Oh." "I hate to interrupt the chit-chat," Leiam bit out, "But, Taren, we have a job to do. Thee hast no time to be making friendly conversation with theives." "Don't be rude, I am still thy superior." suddenly, Taren reached for his sword, but never removed the scabbard, and whacked Leiam across the knuckles, causing him to release Acacia's hair. "RUN!" he urged her, tossing her own sword to her in the process. Acacia simply stood there, surprised that she didn't want to leave the young officer's side. "Run!" he insisted, then saw the look in her eyes and smiled. "I'll catch up. GO!" "Better yet," Acacia grinned and hopped back into the saddle, "We will go together." "Fine." at that, they raced off into the woods, Taren all the while cursing himself for a traitor and an idiot, and Acacia calling herself a cowardly fool for not running on her own when she had the chance. PART 3 They rode all night and well into the next day, not stopping until they found a remote villiage just to the east of Takalador, and the palace guards they were now BOTH running for their lives from. Once inside the villiage gates, they knew they were safe. No one here knew of either of them and here they could get a meal and a bath, and some rest. As soon as she was off Taren's horse, Merlyn, Acacia took a moment to actually look at her unlikely rescuer. She was still in shock that the captain of the palace guard had saved her when he was supposed to arrest her. Now that she really looked at him, another surprise came-he was gorgeous! Taren had unruly black hair that framed his clean-shaven face, and his bangs hung over his creamy jade-green eyes, giving him a mysterious yet innocent look. He was also, she discovered, not much older than herself. When Taren caught the other youth staring, he smiled and went over to her. "Have I got dirt on my face?" he joked queitly. Acacia could only shake her head, so mystified by his handsome face. "No," she whispered, her mouth dry. Slowly, he leaned forward and their lips met, and Acacia thought her knees would give out.She knew then that this was the man she'd been waiting for, this was her soulmate. She pulled away reluctantly, bu t only about a half an inch. "This is impossible," she panted, then they kissed for a few more seconds. Taren pulled away a little next. "I know." But their better judgement couldn't stop them from wanting, loving, each other, and they gave into their emotions, becoming inseparable. [ Back to "Short Love Story" page ] |
